"As Parliament has its say on the guidelines for the EU budget for 2016, there should be huge emphasis placed on value for money at a time when households, families and businesses face daily pressures as a result of national cuts. Yet this report does exactly the opposite - it threatens more of the same: targeted budget increases, a reversal of staff and budget cuts, and a continued fascination with a green agenda. And all of this at a time when Europe claims to want to connect with voters and with its citizens. These proposals fail to reflect the burdens hard-felt by taxpayers right across Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom. They fail to recognise that, for the average person, getting as much back from Europe than they put in, if not more, is the most important thing as to how they view the whole project. But the federalists show little sympathy. This is not democracy - this is a disconnect, and it is time for Members of this House to call it exactly what it is."@en1
