"Madam President, the report on the fight against fraud is a damning indictment of the state of the European Union. On page ten of that report we see that the number of fraudulent irregularities is up by 30% since 2012. We are talking here about 1 609 incidences of fraud which cannot, must not and should not be swept under the carpet. But we still have no failure criteria and we still have no benchmarks so that, even when there is no fraud, our money could be being wasted and we would not have a clue. What is it that prevents effective reporting? Is it the culture of red tape? Or perhaps – as I believe – the problem is actually that it is the nature of taking decisions so far away from the citizen that causes such issues and causes them to be so difficult to highlight. When will this place recognise that Brussels is just too remote from its citizens to be truly accountable?"@en1
