"Madam President, I welcome the commitment to the three Es in this report, in particular to employment, but I echo the comments made by my colleague Jens Geier on needing to reinforce the social policies of the EU. We need to see more productive, effective and forward—thinking investment, investment in industries that will secure growth and jobs, investment in our young people and, crucially, grants for cutting—edge research. With this in mind, I also welcome Vice—President Georgieva’s intention and commitment to assessing the outcomes of the spending of the money that we are committed to in these budgets. The EU budget does deliver positive impacts. I see this in centres of research in my region, and with that in mind, I look forward to working with colleagues here in Parliament over the coming months. We need the EU budget to drive the European economy forward, competing at the cutting edge of new industries."@en1
