"There are many positive aspects within this report which I would fully support. I am pleased that this report made reference to important aspects of gender equality including the worrying feminisation of poverty, the persistent gender pay gap and the importance of Member States acceding to the Istanbul Convention on violence against women, especially considering that Ireland is one of only six EU countries not to have signed this vital treaty. However, I believe that the formulation and implementation of health policies, including sensitive positions taken on abortion services, are a competence of sovereign governments and I therefore, in line with Sinn Féin policy on the issue, abstained on the resolution overall. Sinn Féin believe that in the case of rape, sexual abuse, incest, where a woman’s life is in danger, or in the case of fatal foetal abnormality the option of termination should be available. Sexual and reproductive health and rights cannot be reduced to mean abortion. Reproductive rights can refer to a range of services covering maternal, post-natal, menopausal, reproductive cancers and fertility treatments. It is my party’s and my own view that women should not be denied access to such services."@en1
