"The Committee on Womenʼs Rights and Gender Equality annually adopts a report on progress made towards achieving gender equality, with regard to the European Strategy for Equality between Women and Men 2010-2015. Despite evidence of some progress being made, the glass ceiling is far from being shattered as Europe still lags behind in several urgent areas, including gender-based violence, social exclusion and human trafficking. Nonetheless, I voted with my Group against the latest report. One area I stand vehemently against is the proposal of mandatory quotas for women in boardrooms which undeniably undermine the status of women. Nowadays, few people disagree with the call for a stronger female representation and presence at the top of the corporate ladder. Research confirms that gender diversity on boards results in stronger corporate performance on every measure and that male-dominated cultures in the top echelons of the commercial world lead to excessive risk-taking. However, if we are to talk seriously about tackling the under-representation of women in the higher ranks, rather than introducing mandatory gender quotas we should advocate the implementation of corporate policies which encourage women to step forward; demonstrating that they are just as eligible for rising through the ranks as men. This would assist in promoting women without patronising them."@en1
