"I voted against this report. The core idea that European long-term investment funds (ELTIFs) would support social and environmentally sustainable investments is a positive one. However, the Commission has failed to table adequate provisions in relation to this. The Commission’s proposal aims to provide investors with guaranteed security if investing long-term in infrastructure, education, the health industry or housing. The shadow rapporteursʼ equitable and exhaustive amendments were not included in the compromises, despite being focused on sustainable and viable alternatives. My party are seeking improvements for the real economy and we will not endorse proposals which are designed to benefit certain vested financial interests. Moreover, related to this report is the Commission’s recent Green Paper on Long-term financing of the European Economy. I have a number of concerns with this green paper. It needs to be reiterated that the lack of bank lending is primarily because of austerity policies which eradicated credit demand as opposed to the repetitive claim that the problem is over-regulation of banks. The lack of investment is to do with austerity policies and the introduction of a capital markets union will have no tangible benefit if it is not combined with a rejection of austerity policies."@en1
