"Mr President, I would like to thank our rapporteur, Jörg Leichtfried. He has managed to keep unwarranted hysteria to a minimum, certainly on this issue of mega trucks.
Firstly, my delegation had a number of key political objectives. One was to ensure that the UK would retain the right to determine the use of mega trucks on British roads. Just for clarification, this has been established. So the agreement to operate cross-border is, in my view, as it should be. That should be determined; this is subsidiarity and that again has been the conclusion that has been reached. So I support my Swedish, Dutch and other colleagues too. It is not for me to determine what they choose to do in their Member State.
Secondly, we were also successful in retaining the existing right of trucks which are higher than the permitted 4 metres to operate between the UK and the Republic of Ireland, thus protecting our local hauliers.
Finally, in terms of safer cab design, we did successfully reach an agreement whereby new, safer and more streamlined cab design in lorries will be introduced following the Commission proposal on type-approval legislation which will be coming in the near future. So this will give our manufacturers sufficient time to improve those designs and this should eventually lead to safer vehicles, reducing the risk of death and injury to pedestrians and cyclists. So once again I would like to thank Mr Leichtfried. The ECR will supporting him in the vote today."@en1
