"Mr President, I would like to highlight the impact on trade with the Russian Federation, particularly road transport, caused by the ill thought—out and provocative eastern expansion of the EU. Because haulage companies cannot do meaningful business with Russia they now have to be supported by our taxpayers, with no end to the need for support in sight. We also now have food producers with no market to sell in. Prior to the embargo, 50% of EU exports to Russia were being done using land transport. The impact on huge areas of business cannot be underestimated because the little that is allowed to enter or cross Russia is subject to huge extra costs, increasing the price of goods. The EU is directly responsible for these instabilities. It was a complete folly to provoke Russia by the foolhardy actions of the eastern expansion and this Parliament should regret its actions."@en1
