"Mr President, I would like to thank Marc Tarabella for this excellent report. I would also like to welcome the statement from Madam Jourová that the Commission is going to give gender equality a priority. While I am on this subject, I think we must, all of us, the decent majority in this Chamber, condemn those who have called this report rubbish – because it quite clearly is not rubbish – and those who have also called it irrelevant. This is a vital and necessary report, something that we do every year, and we really do need to make sure that we take stock every year about what is going on. Let us just take women’s employment. We still have, across the EU, a gender pay gap of over 16%. On pensions, older women really suffer – women’s pensions are 39% lower than those of men and there are many other economic examples. This is not only bad for women, it is bad for Europe. It is bad for our economy because we miss out on that talent. For our sake, and for the sake of Europe and for the sake of women, all the decent people in this House, I know the vast majority will support Mr Tarabella’s report."@en1
