"Mr President, 2013 was the year during which the Irish Government held the Presidency of the EU. It was also the year when the Central Statistics Office in Ireland (SCO) recorded that over 250 people every day were leaving Irish shores in an emigration wave that was a direct result of the austerity policies that were championed by the ECB. When we look at the matter of banking debt it is quite apparent from listening to the discussions today that the ECB has provided no thought to, or indeed mention of, the huge amount of debt that Irish generations are going to be saddled with.
It should be remembered that, despite the fact that Ireland makes up 0.9% of the European population – 1.2% of the EU GDP – the Irish people have paid over 42% of the European banking crisis. It should also be remembered that this was a European financial crisis, not just an Irish one, and the Irish people have suffered beyond all proportion. I again call on the President of the ECB to acknowledge the role that his institution played in bailing out the Irish banks at the cost of billions to our people, and it is simply not good enough to continue to abdicate responsibility. The Irish people need – and deserve – answers."@en1
