It has a remit going well beyond that which a committee of inquiry would have had as the latter is limited to looking at a violation of existing law whereas what is needed is to look at the insufficiencies of current law. A study by the S&D Group concluded that the total amount lost to national exchequers from tax avoiders and tax evasion across Europe is greater than the sum of all government deficits added together. If this committee can contribute in any way to addressing this problem it will have done European citizens a great service."@en1
