Each of the one thousand lashes against Raif Badawi is human rights abuse: abuse in which we must all feel the pain, and we must all act. Raif’s wife, Ensaf Haider, told us personally that his suffering is so great that he cannot speak about it and the only words that he can utter are distress at the impact on his children. She asked us to ask for a pardon but at the same time, Commissioner, for him to leave the country and to join their family. Today we do so. When the European Union announced, on Monday, cooperation with Saudi Arabia on countering terrorism, we have to remember that the Saudis have called Raif a terrorist. If Europe’s cooperation with Saudi Arabia is to mean anything, we have to use it to free Raif. Free Raif. Free Raif."@en1
