"I am a strong advocate of consumers knowing where and how their food has been manufactured, however, I do not believe mandatory country of origin labelling would have helped to prevent the horse-meat scandal. The horse-meat scandal was fraud carried out by criminals only interested in making money. We need better enforcement of the current legislation rather than more red tape. Furthermore, the unintended consequence of country of origin labelling for Northern Ireland has been to restrict market access for liquid milk to the Republic of Ireland. Country of Origin labelling has been manipulated to exclude produce from Northern Ireland being sold in the ROI. This is clearly a breach of the single market obligations and damaging to farmers in my constituency, Northern Ireland. I have no doubt that mandatory country of origin labelling will exacerbate this problem across the EU if not dealt with correctly."@en1
