"Mr President, yesterday I heard one of the right-wing UK MEPs state that politicians who support freedom of expression, religion and enterprise should feel a chill when hearing the words ‘internet governance’. Now I value these rights extremely highly and that is why, rather than simply feeling negative or even scared when this issue is raised, I prefer to use my role as an MEP to call on the Commission to use this valuable opportunity offered by the IGF for a truly multi-stakeholder forum for managing the internet. Parliament can play a crucial role in turning this into a reality by participating in the annual IGF meeting, and I urge the Commission to coordinate closely with Parliament to make sure the voices of our citizens are heard. The colleague I referred to also stated that he does feel, however, that there should be a means of preventing dissemination of material on the internet which facilitates terrorism. Now knowing this, I am convinced that he will welcome the measures proposed by my party which call for reviewing police and CPS guidance to ensure anti-semitism, islamophobia and other hate crimes – prime breeding grounds for extremism – are adequately tackled on social media."@en1
