"I voted in favour of this resolution because recent events clearly indicate the need for a counter-terrorism roadmap which ensures a better use of existing instruments in full respect of citizens’ rights, which creates new instruments where necessary, and connects the dots between action on local, national, EU and international levels. I am deeply concerned by reports stating that, at a time in which increased coordination is desperately needed, British intelligence officials are threatening to stop sharing information with Berlin on jihadists returning from Syria and Iraq, amongst other issues, if Germany pushes ahead with a parliamentary inquiry into British intelligence activities in their country. Second, it is crucial that we fight the root-causes of radicalisation by adopting a preventive approach rather than a reactive one, which includes measures in the fields of education, inclusion and anti-discrimination. Third, we need to reflect thoroughly about our foreign policy and the regimes we have been tolerating. Events in Libya, Egypt and Syria have shown us that repression breeds terrorism rather than stability. Tackling terrorism both inside and outside Europe will require us to start learning lessons from past mistakes – rather than simply repeating them."@en1
