"Coming from a constituency blighted for so long by organised criminality led by Republican terrorist gangs, I recognise the clear need to combat those involved in this activity to protect our community and economy. However, I also believe that it should not be the primary role of the European Union to do so. National crime-fighting authorities should be the leading power in tracking down and breaking up these crime rings – not EU quangos such as a European Public Prosecutor’s Office. And I hope all Members present will join with me in welcoming the full extension of the UK National Crime Agency to Northern Ireland. This is a huge step forward in the fight against organised crime, and is testament to the fact that no political faction caught up with self-interest should be able to prevent a full fight against fuel and money laundering, as well as illicit trade. It is somewhat ironic that the Sinn Féin MEP for Northern Ireland has criticised a top Israeli military official as having ‘blood on his hands’, ignoring her own terrorist past and her party’s failing in refusing to support the fight against organised crime through the NCA. I would call on Parliament not to follow this dangerous precedent."@en1
