"I welcome the adoption of this resolution and voted in favour. It is a confirmation of the EP’s long-held position that torture is unacceptable and contrary to international law, wherever torture is practised in the world. I also welcome the fact that the EP continues to press for the closure of Guantánamo. I wish to see the return of London resident Shaker Aamer to the UK to rejoin his wife and family. He is one of those mentioned in the Resolution as cleared for transfer, and the UK Government is prepared to accept him – yet, inexplicably, he remains in Guantánamo. His case shows that the repercussions of extraordinary rendition and torture still continue to affect lives and have ongoing political consequences. The EP’s enquiries deserve to continue until questions are answered and justice is seen to be done."@en1
