"Mr President, I voted in favour of this resolution as hopefully it will lay the foundation for an important inquiry report into illegal rendition programmes within Member States. Many European countries – unfortunately and regrettably including my own – have stifled any attempts to conduct real, proper investigations.
For our part, in my own party, Sinn Féin, we have been very vocal in our condemnation of the facilitation of secret CIA detention, rendition and interrogation programmes, which unfortunately have been facilitated through the use of a domestic airport in Ireland. I have to say that it is very disappointing that the Irish Government has helped facilitate these illegal actions. So therefore we supported this resolution in the hope that it would provide the necessary safeguards to ensure that these types of practices are not allowed to continue under our noses and against the wishes of the citizens of our states."@en1
