"Mr President, I voted in favour of my group’s resolution because I think it is simply impossible for the EU to be seen as a credible actor if it does not call for investigation and prosecution of the gross human rights violations that occurred in CIA prisons. I am disappointed that some groups wanted to water down the message we are sending on this to the US because it concerns a major partner. What happened in the CIA prisons is not only horrifying and legally wrong, it is also counterproductive in the context of our fight against terrorism, which means ultimately the security of our citizens is also on the line.
That is why it is really important we investigate whether there has been transportation and illegal detention of prisoners by the CIA in the EU so we can take the steps in line with EU interests if these allegations are proved true. I am of course particularly horrified by allegations that the UK Government has lobbied to have deletion of any references to the UK from this report."@en1
