"I supported the proposal to facilitate cross-border exchange of information on road safety traffic offences. The objective of the proposal is to allow for an exchange of vehicle registration information between Member States to identify drivers who commit a road traffic offence in a Member State other than the one where their vehicle is registered. The offences covered are speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, not using a seat belt and failing to stop at a red light. This directive replaces a previous directive which essentially would have had the same effect but a dispute arose over its legal base. All of the different issues have now been sorted out and we can expect this new legislation to enter into force in the near future."@en1
