"Like the vast majority of Members of Parliament, I stand fully behind the principle of cooperation toward tackling avoidable deaths and injuries on roads across Europe caused by reckless or illegal driving.
Working together often works best, however it can only happen if the system of informative exchange does not become ineffective or bureaucratic.
I am mindful that the recent ruling by the European Court of Justice has compelled the UK Government to now opt-in to this Directive. Such coercion illustrates how the EU has degraded the capacity of Member States to legislate for their own citizens.
The UK Department for Transport tell us that many of their previous concerns around the Directive have been tackled. This includes fears that vehicle owners, instead of drivers, will be wrongly targeted by the new powers, and concern that private data could be shared wrongly or incur severe cost for storage. These have not fully been addressed. I have heard from various constituents who have been subject to disproportionate penalties for offences in other Member States.
I would call on the UK Government to provide reassurances that this Directive will act in the best interests of motorists across the United Kingdom."@en1
