"Mr President, I voted in favour of this regulation which is aimed at facilitating the cross-border exchange of information relating to traffic offences. The implementation of this is crucial as it should mean that people who have committed a road traffic offence in a country that they are not resident in can still face the penalties for their actions. This is a particular issue, as has already been said, in Ireland, where unfortunately we have a land border and a minority of drivers have used that border as a mechanism to basically show disregard for road safety laws when travelling on the opposite side.
We know also that drivers from other EU countries have been basically immune when they are driving on Irish roads. So, hopefully we can now reach the point where penalty points can be shared across jurisdictions, because the priority has to be to ensure the safety of all road users."@en1
