"Madam President, protecting the rights and interests of children must be our priority and the EU has already done a lot, but one thing has just got a lot worse. This is the European hotline for missing children, 116 000, launched by the Commission in 2007, but this January the funding was cut. The 116 000 number is an essential tool in tackling international child abduction, providing a vital source of practical and emotional support for families and vulnerable children. It allows organisations to work together across country borders to locate missing children and reconnect them with their place of safety. In the UK alone, the charity Missing People received over 50 000 calls, texts and emails last year. Cutting the funding for this service means calls will go unanswered and missing children will be deprived of that vital lifeline. I urge the Commission and Member States to restore this funding for the missing children hotline so it can continue."@en1
