"We urge the Commission to take concrete steps in order to eradicate the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the European Union. Around 120 million women and young girls in the world have been the victims of such horrible mutilations. It is time now that all women at risk of FGM in the EU should be protected, as it is recognised as a violation of human rights of girls and women. This practice brings no health benefits and only harms the human body, carrying long-term consequences and health risks. That is why asylum must be granted to those at risk from FGM and we must enact legislation prohibiting FGM. Preventive measures to stop violence against women and girls are also vital and we should promote and support action taken at the individual Member State level."@en1
