"Mr President, Commissioner, people tend to look at the youth unemployment crisis as a southern European problem, but if you look at the figures you will see it is a problem in all parts of the EU, including in my country – the UK – where over 760 000 young people are still desperately looking for work. If we are serious about tackling the terrible plight of these young people, we need to be much more ambitious, and whilst I applaud bringing forward money under the Youth Employment Initiative, I cannot help but think this is a mere drop in the ocean, a short-term boost without any long-term gain. Labour MEPs believe we need to see ambitious plans, in particular for the Youth Guarantee Scheme, which will boost and re-energise those young people who feel abandoned in the current job market. It is a shame the current UK Government has shown no interest in implementing the Youth Guarantee. However, Commissioner, I am sure you will be pleased to hear that my party – the Labour Party – is committed to a real jobs guarantee in the UK to get our youth unemployed into work."@en1
