"In the UK, nearly 70% of people say we are not doing enough to tackle climate change. Yet British politicians on the right choose to ignore this, claiming – in blatant disregard of the scientific consensus that exists among 97% of the world’s leading climate scientists – that the link between rising carbon dioxide levels and human activity is ‘open to question’. The EU is in a unique position to take effective measures that respond to the aspirations of our citizens. Firstly, moving forward the European energy union will be crucial. Little progress was made on this under the former Commission. This Commission has to do things differently. An important test will be the roadmap on energy union which we expect to see next month and which should put us firmly on the path towards a sustainable, decarbonised economy based on renewables. Secondly, the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) needs urgent reform. I find it extremely disappointing that proposals put forward by my party to address this issue in an effective way were brushed off the table last week. However, we succeeded in blocking an attempt from the right to further water down reform of the ETS, and our battle continues."@en1
