"Freedom of expression is a vital component of any democracy, as one of the key tools with which to hold government to account. This fundamental right faces increasing pressure in President Erdogan’s Turkey and I am pleased to see the topic on this week’s agenda. The number of journalists imprisoned in Turkey has long been of concern, but the past year has seen an increasing number of high-profile arrests as part of a clear assault on freedom of the press. Erdogan’s ill-fated attempt to block access to Twitter during last year’s Presidential election fits only too well into this narrative, and we should welcome the Constitutional Court’s ruling against that ban. Indeed, amidst the myriad of reports questioning the Turkish judiciary’s independence, particularly in light of the corruption scandal last year, I am only too pleased take advantage of this opportunity to offer praise to the judiciary. The assault on press freedom and expression are illustrative of the wider changes that we are witnessing in Turkey as it moves away from the shared values it was hoped it would have with the EU"@en1
