"I voted in favour of this resolution because recent attacks on the media by the Turkish Government are deeply worrying. It is simply shocking that Turkey currently has one of the highest numbers of jailed journalists in the world. Turkey is an extremely important partner for the EU in many fields – not least for our economy and in the fight against terrorism – but it will only continue to be so if it returns to the path of democracy and respect for civil rights. It is in all our interests that we work together to make this happen. That is why, while we do need to make clear that this situation is in no way acceptable to us, it is also important not to allow parties on the right to use this as a pretext to call for halting accession negotiations. This will benefit neither EU citizens nor the Turkish, as it will only result in taking away the most important sticks and carrots we have for encouraging Istanbul to increase media freedom and improve collaboration with the EU in areas of common interest."@en1
