"I voted in favour of this resolution because we urgently need to send a strong signal to the Sisi government that the human rights situation in Egypt is unacceptable. 40 000 political activists have been made prisoners, hundreds are being sentenced to death in mass trials, civilians can be brought before military courts and NGOs are facing stiff repression. We cannot close our eyes to this. I am particularly baffled by the fact that no one has been made to answer for the killing of over 1 000 demonstrators at the Raba’a al-Adawiya and an-Nahda squares in August 2013. This crackdown will only be pushing greater numbers into the arms of terrorist organisations, and I find the potential role that could be played by Western technology and equipment in enabling the Egyptian authorities to repress its citizens deeply worrying. We need to take a strong stance, because our failure to act will not only jeopardize the lives of Egyptians, but those of citizens all over the world, including our own."@en1
