"Mr President, the current political climate in Egypt has offered a vacuum for an escalation in violence and persecution against religious minorities, including Christians living in that country. I would add my voice to those calling for a peaceful and democratic transition to a political system, an economy and a society that is inclusive and respectful of fundamental freedoms. Events in France this month have sent shockwaves across the world and carry a message that the freedom of the press is not something that is easily secured or which can be taken for granted. With this in mind, I would call on the High Representative to do all in her powers to seek the release of the three Al-Jazeera journalists currently awaiting trial in Egypt. The freedoms of expression, speech and the press, as well as the right to a fair trial, are principles that should be at the core of the EU’s policy dialogue with Egypt in the days ahead."@en1
