"The crisis in Ukraine, including Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014, continues to cause a strategic shock for Europe. Russian aggression has threatened the European security order that we have taken for granted since the end of the Cold War. The sending of troops into Crimea and arming militants in eastern Ukraine has significantly heightened tensions in neighbouring countries, and it would seem that Russia’s actions imply that the Kremlin is no longer interested in a partnership with Europe. In response to this violation of international law, the EU has adopted a number of sanctions against Russia. Even though a new government has been formed in Ukraine, the situation in the east is still challenging, with the ceasefire constantly being broken by the Russian-led separatists in addition to an upsurge of regular Russian troops sent into the region. Whilst it has been suggested that Ukraine should attempt to compromise with Russia, this currently seems implausible, as Mr Poroshenko recently tweeted ‘we are prepared for a scenario of total war’. My Group wholeheartedly supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine and continues to loudly call for withdrawal of Russian troops from the eastern part of the region, and in Crimea, the control over which must be returned to Kiev."@en1
