"Mr President, I wish to congratulate the Ombudsman on the publication of her first Annual Report and also on the dynamism that she has brought to the role. It is important that the European Institutions be very concerned about the actual number of complaints being received by the Ombudsman’s office and, obviously, one of the most common themes of complaints is the lack of transparency. We are moving towards a very important period in the lifespan of this mandate. There is a real threat to democracy, in terms of international trade agreements and specifically the ISDS mechanisms and, with a certain regard, towards TTIP. I want to commend the Ombudsman on the initiation of a report on transparency around the TTIP negotiations and I would stress that, if these agreements are ratified, they will not only compromise democratically-elected Member States’ governments, they are also going to be setting a very dangerous precedent for how the EU Council and Commission view the issue of transparency in the long term."@en1
