"Madam President, one thing that we can all do immediately is to speed up the EU Passenger Name Record (PNR) Directive. It has been mentioned – and I agree with previous speakers – that organised crime was behind last week’s killings in Paris. They were funded through organised crime and by organised crime. We need to act together: the institutions of Europe need to act together, we need to share information, support one another at state level and also move forward on this directive, which would be a vital element in equipping our security services to combat organised crime and terrorism. Organised crime is a threat to society, whether it be through drugs, drug importation, drug smuggling or arms smuggling. And, of course, trafficking in human beings is an extremely serious crime against human beings that we need to tackle. It is particularly so for Europe, which values its protection of the individual. Crime against children, and specifically cybercrime, is a major challenge. Sexual abuse of children on line is a horrendous crime that needs to be tackled, and I would urge the Commission and the Council to ensure that the internet companies assume responsibility here and play their part in ensuring that we can work together to tackle this vile crime."@en1
