"Madam President, recent tragedies in the Mediterranean have shown us that the situation there, and the migratory pressures which the EU faces, are not at an end. Migrants are not deterred by the risk to their lives. They are often fleeing desperation, extreme poverty and war, but too often they are aided by ruthless and exploitative human traffickers. Year on year, more lives are lost within sight of the European coastline.
Now it is time for more straight talking and proper action, not just pointing out the problems. We need to look at strengthening the EU’s border surveillance, and the role of Frontex. Mediterranean countries need to step up their humanitarian responsibilities to treat those arriving with dignity. The Commission needs to make sure that all Member States are living up to their obligations, particularly with regard to detention conditions. We need more solidarity and more joined-up thinking. Member States must process efficiently and quickly the applications of asylum seekers who arrive, even if it means more administrative work and resources.
We especially need to ensure that unaccompanied minors are protected and safe, and that their best interests are at the forefront of our actions. We need the toughest penalties for human traffickers across the EU, and third countries must take action against them too. The EU also needs an efficient and effective returns policy through cooperation with third countries.
Of course we need to support Member States with resettlement and community integration, but we also need to stop demonising citizens who do have genuine concerns about immigration and integration, otherwise this Parliament merely plays into the hands of those with an anti-immigration agenda."@en1
