"I voted in favour of the Mato report because I think it is vital that measures are adopted to protect living aquatic resources in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and connecting waters. It is deeply worrying that, over the past two centuries, there has been a decline in the population of sharks in the Mediterranean Sea of more than 97%, putting them at risk of extinction if current fishing levels continue. Meanwhile, nine out of 13 regular species of whale and dolphin in the Mediterranean and Black Seas are classified in categories ranging from vulnerable to critically endangered. Mitigating incidental captures and improving the protection of these and other endangered animals, such as seabirds, sea turtles, monk seals and coral species, will be crucial if we want to avoid causing irreversible damage to the ecosystem of our seas."@en1
