"I have no generalised objection to GMOs. On the contrary, I can see great merit in the introduction of strains that, for example, reduce the need for pesticides or increase crop yield and quality, or reduce the requirement for watering. I am committed to a science-based approach. While the final agreement reached is satisfactory, in that it allows those EU countries that so wish to grow GMOs, the downside is that it enables others to proceed directly to national bans rather than first seeking a more legally sound opt-out. It also allows these bans to be applied to ‘groups of GMOs’, rather than case by case, and it widens the basis for a ban. Apart from other considerations, these features could open up a range of potential problems and complications relating to neighbouring countries and to food exports and imports etc. I was therefore content to follow the UK Government position in Council and abstain."@en1
