"As the world population continues to grow, it is imperative that our ability to provide larger quantities of food, in as efficient and stable a manner as possible, improves. GMOs provide a potential to do this and it is therefore important that, as politicians, we approach this subject in an objective way and with a science-based approach. All too often, however, we see knee-jerk reactions based on the politics of fear and half-truths, resulting in ill-conceived policies. The proposal put forward today is, unfortunately, in this mould and I am unable to vote in favour. It would see bans apply to so-called groups of GMOs, for instance, rather than acting on a case-by-case basis – a clear example of legislation that fails to account for scientific method. In the broader sphere of this debate, I hope that we will see a pragmatic approach emerge in the coming years that sees those countries wishing to proceed with GMOs do so, and those with reservations to be respected."@en1
