"Many scare stories are spread about on the issue of GM foods, but all too often these are not evidence-based. In matters like this, I am always guided by one key principle – follow the science. Allowing bans on GM foods on ambiguous grounds does not make for good policy. Policy must be based on sound science. If the EU turns its back on technological innovation in the agri-food industry, how are we to meet the great challenge of ensuring food security and sustainability? With the world population expected to exceed 9 billion in 2050, we will have to face up to producing more food from the same amount of land. If GM crops can produce higher yields and are resistant to disease without having a negative impact on human health, then I believe we should be more open to exploring their use, if that is the direction Member States wish to take. While I welcome the proposal, insofar as it goes some way to breaking the GM logjam, it does not ultimately provide a balanced, reasonable outcome on this issue, and that is why I chose to abstain."@en1
