"Unblocking the 15-year deadlock on GM cultivation is something I very much welcome. But giving Member States the right to ban their cultivation on non-scientific grounds sets a dangerous precedent. We need to encourage science and innovation, not deter it. We need to base decisions on scientific evidence, not uninformed prejudice. There are enormous benefits that biotechnology can provide. I recently visited Rothamsted Research Station. It is the longest-running agricultural research station in the world, providing cutting-edge science and innovation for nearly 170 years. I was especially interested to hear about their work on Omega-3 oils. These oils have proved to be beneficial to human health. They are currently only available through marine fish. Rothamsted has developed Camelina plants that accumulate Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in their seeds, thus providing a novel method of creating a terrestrial source of this essential oil, utilising existing farming practice and machinery. This is what GM cultivation is really about: GM technology has much to offer us and we should not deprive our citizens of its potential benefits."@en1
