"Crucial in winning my support for this report was the fact that, compared to the original Council position, it provides for enhanced environmental impact assessments of new GMOs, stronger measures that allow for better management of the coexistence of GM and non-GM crops, and increased protection against the unwanted influence of biotech companies. I also believe it is vital that the report benefits smaller, traditional or organic farmers who tend to create more employment in the sector than the large industrial farms that are typically involved in GMO cultivation. Finally, I welcome the fact that ultimately, it would be up to citizens to decide on whether or not their country will be involved in GMO cultivation, as the report allows for flexible and democratic opt-out."@en1
