"Madam President, I want to raise in the Chamber this evening the appalling crime of human trafficking and, in particular, the distressing subject of child trafficking. Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world; it is the second largest source of illegal income worldwide, 1.2 million people are trafficked every year globally, and it is estimated that 27 to 35 million people worldwide are trapped in a life of slavery. That is just short of the entire population of Poland.
I want to commend the work of Tearfund with their ‘No child taken’ campaign, which tackles this issue head on. By focusing on 50 000 of the most vulnerable children, helping through education and vocational training and equipping them with skills which can lift them out of poverty, it is hoped that this will help keep those children safe from trafficking.
In conclusion, a child is trafficked every 30 seconds. In the time I have been speaking tonight, two children will have fallen prey to traffickers. We have to work together to tackle this appalling crime and to ensure that children are protected across the world."@en1
