"I voted against this resolution which sought to block the Philippines receiving the preferential trading scheme GSP+. This scheme is for vulnerable countries which sign, ratify and commit to implementing the 27 core ILO conventions on labour, environmental and human rights standards. The Philippines has done this and now serious scrutiny and monitoring will begin by the Commission and Parliament. I objected to the resolution because, although there are concerns about illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the Philippines, this should be addressed separately. If their current ‘yellow’ card became ‘red’, fish imports to the EU will be blocked. But the technical and non-political criteria for GSP+ is within WTO rules and is the beginning of the process of monitoring, not the end."@en1
