"Mr President, while the ECR deeply regrets Russia’s continued occupation of Georgian territory, condemns the numerous cases of prosecution of former government members, and has concerns about selective justice – particularly against the former President – it has nevertheless been an exciting year in terms of closer Eastern Partnership relations between the EU and Georgia.
We, as a Group, fully support and welcome the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement and the Association Agreement, as it provides for Georgia’s political association with the European Union in addition to the country’s economic integration into the world’s largest economic market.
By signing the Agreement, Georgia has assumed Treaty obligations to consolidate the rule of law, including independence of its judiciary, to pursue legislative reforms, to strengthen respect for fundamental human rights and freedoms, and to reinforce democratic institutions. A further aspect of the Agreement is that it will substantially enhance the political dialogue between Georgia and the EU, increase the involvement of civil society and promote tolerance for its minorities.
Far from being merely a set of rules and regulations, this really is a good trade agreement as it brings Georgia closer to the European Union and helps it resist Russian revanchist pressures."@en1
