"Mr Fountoulis, I absolutely agree that all breaches of human rights must be condemned equally and fairly and objectively, but what worried me about this debate is that I have heard people who are all too willing to queue up to criticise Turkey but who then, in relation to other countries in other situations, have prejudices which lead them to fail to do so. Let us be consistent ourselves in upholding human rights.
To my friend Mr Tannock, other than wishing him Happy Christmas, I think it is fair to say that whilst I am a friend of Turkey – and I am happy to be described as such, I love the country, I want it to join the European Union – that is why I do not like what I see there today. It is fair to say that he has a different point of view and he would probably have that point of view irrespective of what has happened over the weekend. I was talking to Commissioner Hahn today and said to him that we do not want pre-emptive action in relation to accession, and Commissioner Hahn told me that he was of a similar mind. Let us condemn what is happening in Turkey, but then let us reflect on how we can best help the situation there."@en1
