"Mr President, days ago the Pope stood in this very Chamber and told us that when Europe is not anchored to its values it sets itself adrift. It is very easy to point the finger at this Chamber and say: you are being soft on terrorism and terrorists. But I stand as somebody who has faced the machine guns of the Taliban and survived, and faced far-right extremists as well. Those who attack us attack us because they want to take our values away from us. Do not allow them to take from us through our reaction what they could never take from us through their actions. I do not just stand in criticism of the USA today. I stand to criticise all those who stood by and watched silently – that includes some of our governments. Others went further and facilitated these illegal methods also. Today we have no guarantees that any of our citizens could not face such acts again and our governments are still concealing facts. We have a choice, colleagues: either we unite behind our values or we divide and face the consequences."@en1
