"I voted in favour of this motion for resolution because a holistic approach to EU migration is disgracefully long overdue. President Juncker promised us yesterday the Commission would increase coordination and effectiveness in its work. The fact that over 3500 people lost their lives this year trying to cross the Mediterranean is why it should lose no time fulfilling this promise.
What we need is coordinated internal and external policies, and I am sad to say the idea of a migration policy that lowers the burden on both migrants and EU citizens seems to be lost on many governments, including the UK's: how can we stop our citizens' wages being undercut if prosecutions for illegal exploitation of migrant workers by gangmasters have dropped by 84%?
Meanwhile, an additional 200 million people could be displaced due to climate change by 2050, yet some parties in the UK and elsewhere are trying to block the adoption of strong targets to tackle global warming.
If we want to move forward on solving issues related to migration, a smart, coordinated and humane approach is the only way to go."@en1
