"Mr President, I come from a steel town, Middlesbrough, in a region with thousands of jobs based in energy-intensive industries, including steel, which underpin our regional economy. In 2009–2010, our local community fought hard to save our steel and ensure a future for Redcar’s blast furnace. It was not just a fight to preserve our industrial infrastructure and assets; we need investment in upgrading them and in environmental improvement – this would create jobs in a sustainable industry long into the future – and we need to recognise that we need ultra-low-carbon steel.
I welcome the Teesside City deal focussed on building an industrial cluster around carbon capture and storage. This is set to create 4 000 new jobs and sustain 20 000 more in our local industries. I co-signed and strongly supported today’s resolution, because it sends a clarion call to the Commission and Member States to involve the workforce and industry, and to finally implement the European Steel Action Plan."@en1
