"I wish to see a negotiated two-state outcome to the Middle East Peace Process, resulting in a secure, universally recognised and essentially Jewish State of Israel, alongside a sovereign, viable, democratic, terrorist-free Palestinian State. I therefore voted against the joint resolution, which fails to identify the continued sources of terrorism in the Palestinian territories and fails to address the fundamental problem: the non-existence of a government whose writ runs throughout the Palestinian territories, including Gaza. The resolution seeks to enhance the role of the EU, ignoring the fact that the EU has little to show for 10 years of involvement, when the Quartet has not met for over a year, and the EU does not use its financial leverage to bring about an end to terrorism and a fresh start to negotiations. Contrary to its own admonitions, the resolution itself is an ‘incitement and provocation’. In any case, the EU does not have the right to confer recognition; this is the prerogative of our national governments."@en1
