"I believe it is truly regrettable that this debate on Palestinian statehood has even reached this Chamber.
It is my view that a Palestinian state can only derive from direct bilateral negotiations between Israel and Palestinian representatives.
This is the position upheld by numerous international agreements, including the Oslo Accords and several UN resolutions – and it is why all unilateral efforts to gain this recognition external to substantive negotiations must be roundly condemned.
Today’s vote also ignores the biggest obstacle to a Palestinian state – terrorism, which has at its core the aim of destroying Israel. Hamas do not accept a two-state solution and their acts of terror must stop before any talks start. This is a position that my party has stood up for in Northern Ireland in times past and it is equally right to do so in this situation."@en1
