"My Labour Party colleague, Richard Howitt, called for a debate on this issue in November to attempt to break the deadlock which currently exists in the Peace Talks.
I am committed to a negotiated two state solution, with Israel safe, secure and recognised within its borders, living peacefully alongside a democratic and viable Palestinian state.
I voted for recognition as I hope it will provide vital impetus to those who support peace on both sides of the conflict, and provide a message of hope that too many years of conflict can finally be ended; recognition is not an alternative to peace talks but could be a vital push to advancing them.I believe Palestinian recognition can help strengthen moderate voices among the Palestinians who want to pursue the path of politics, not the path of violence. I also welcome greater co-operation between the EU and Israel through trade as well as scientific and cultural exchanges. I believe now is the time to deepen, not weaken, our economic and cultural ties across the region. I welcome this vote and look forward to the EU helping to bring peace to the Middle East."@en1
